At this point, it is no secret that social media has opened many doors for aspiring artists. Aforetime, acquiring a record deal was an arduous process. But now, overnight fame is a possibility. That is what happened to Shawn Mendes.

Born in Ontario, Canada, Shawn Peter has been fond of music since school. A decade ago, in 2012, to showcase his singing abilities, he began uploading song covers to the platform YouTube.

After growing a small fanbase, this caught the eye of manager Andrew Gertler. By 2014, he had found a home under Island Records. Shortly after, he released his first extended play (EP) called “The Shawn Mendes EP.”

One year later, his long-play (LP) “Handwritten” hit the stores. It was a pleasant introduction to a wider scope beyond YouTube.

Undoubtedly, a distinctive single can shift the path for any artist. Indeed, he achieved a new peak with “There Is Nothing Holding Me Back” from his next output, “Illuminate” (2017).

Importantly, he did not settle and kept working on new material. For example, his self-titled album (2019) included another smash hit (e.g., “Señorita“).

After six years of remaining active, 2020 was not going to be any different. Thus in the last quarter, he announced his new endeavor called “Wonder.”

The LP begins with a beautiful piano playing in the back. The track cuts as it transitions to the next one, where Mendes wonders what it feels like to be loved.

Song For No One” highlights his vocal skills and “305” increases its tempo to a catchy beat. Lastly, “Can’t Imagine” closes the record, only this time, with a guitar lingering in the background.

In addition, the project was accompanied by a documentary titled “Shawn Mendes: in Wonder,” where the audience sees a glimpse of his early beginnings, his 2019 tour, and the making of the album.

With a total of 14 songs clocking in at 39 minutes running time, the project counts with the sole feature of Canadian singer Justin Bieber.

So far, all of his LPs have reached the summit on the charts. He is just 23 years old with plenty of time to wonder about life.
