“Time Share” movie review: Nightmare during Vacation

Time Share is a Mexican movie drama that premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Sebastián Hofmann, it stars Luis Méndez, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Miguel Rodarte, Montserrat Maranon, RJ Mitte, and Andrés Almeida. Here, I review the outcome of when a family gets their vacation interrupted by others.

An average of 24 days per year is what most employees get for holidays. Indeed, the reason to get excited once they finally arrive. Searching for a getaway place can be an arduous task. But once you have narrowed your options to one, you can start packing your bags.

And that is exactly what the family of three has done: Pedro (played by Méndez), Eva (Ciangherotti), and their son. Of all the places in the world, they have chosen the great “Everfield” paradise. Upon their arrival, they are given a luxury villa for enjoyment, relaxation, and disturbance-free.

However, by the end of the night, Mr. Abey (Almeida) and his family also show up, stating they have also booked the same condo. Clearly, a mistake. But in fact, the resort has overbooked the rooms. Thus the unfamiliar families have no choice but to share.

If we look at the whole perspective, from one side, 50 % of the people are on holiday, whereas the other half are working. At a resort, this would consist as follows.

  • cleaning staff
  • housekeeping
  • chefs
  • receptionists
  • entertainers
  • walk-on sales employees

The latter is the most prestigious position at Everfield. Mr. Tom (Mitte), the sales manager, is in charge of training. Their main goal is to convince vacationers to upgrade to their loyalty program. Of course, as a salesperson, the more families you sway, the more you showcase your salesmanship.

And exactly that is what Gloria (Marañon) is trying to achieve. However, the teaching methods and techniques can be a little unorthodox, per se.

Undoubtedly, in the end, the one who benefits the most is the big corporation. Unfortunately, her husband, Andres (Rodarte), who is part of the cleaning staff, isn’t praised as much as she is.

As events unfold, so do characters, whose sinister pasts start to come to light. Will the families survive by the end of their holiday?

The movie, “Time Share” displays the events that can happen during a layoff review. It won the best screenplay at 2018’s Sundance.

An amazing win for Mexican cinematography. Watch the trailer in the link below.
