Verzuz is a digital streaming online platform for artists to recreate a musical battle experience. The creators are producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. On March 24, 2020, they hopped on Instagram Live for a virtual battle for fans to enjoy. Little did they know that it would become the new normal for some time.

To understand the virtual battles, we have to rewind the tape to the early 1970s. When Hip-Hop first burst onto the scene, it gained popularity at house parties. These parties would complement DJs, breakdancing, graffiti, and rapping. Thus, this set the ambiance for one versus one.

Hip-hop has always been a competitive sport, and rap battles are proof of that. A rap battle consists of two opponents and a DJ. Once the DJ spins the wheel, the participants take turns to follow the beat and spit their best bars. Lastly, the audience crowns the winner as whoever has the best set.

In July 2017, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz called each other out for a virtual beat battle. However, it wasn’t until the Summer Jam 2018 held in New Jersey that the hit-makers took the stage for a proper face-off. Instead of spitting bars, they came packed with some of their best-produced catalog.

In March 2020, once the COVID-19 pandemic spread, the iconic producers arranged another virtual battle. But this one was different, captivating the attention of millions. As a result, Verzuz music was created.

The rules are simple: two opponents (producers or singers) face off in 20 rounds while playing their best catalog. The songs can be:

• Own solo songs
• Songs they have written for other artists
• Songs they have produced

Instead of packing stadiums or venues, viewers watched the show while joining the Instagram Live session. The first season boasted battles from well-known producers Boi-1da vs. Hit-Boy to veteran rap artists Nelly vs. Ludacris to singers Alicia Keys vs. John Legend. The spotlight has always shone on the artists, until now.

Verzuz has not only brought fans together but has also helped squash long-lasting feuds. Namely, after two decades of not seeing eye to eye, rap artists Jeezy and Gucci Mane put it all behind them by kicking off season 2 in November 2020.

Moreover, Verzuz music has also given a platform for producers to display their catalogs. Throughout storytelling, artists and producers share with fans how the song came to be (behind the scenes) and now and then release never-before-heard verses or songs.

To fans’ delight, in January 2021, Timbo and Swizz Beatz announced they were in the early stages of implementing holograms into their Verzuz series. In fact, they already have quite the line-up, which could include Hip-Hop’s Tupac (R.I.P) vs. Biggie (R.I.P) and singers Prince (R.I.P) vs. Michael Jackson (R.I.P).

It is worth mentioning that fans have already experienced holograms before. In 2012, the Coachella festival showcased a posthumous live performance of Tupac Shakur. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how Verzuz applies the technology in the future.

Out of a bad situation, Verzuz has been able to bring fans together for a virtual musical battle experience. Despite both producers teaming up for a proper song in 2013 (ironically, called Versus), this collaboration of Verzuz is their best creation yet.

Early Twenties is the debut LP of singer Cat Burns. She first burst into the music scene in 2016. Eight years later, she released her first album. Is this the best LP of 2024? In the third edition of Music, Movies, and Me Awards, let’s break it down.

It is no surprise that the surroundings influence and shape a person for their future. For example, thanks to her mother, singer Maggie Rogers grew up listening to Lauryn Hill, to name an artist.

For Cat Burns, the gospel music played in the background of her household inclined her towards falling in love with music.

Generally, in the music industry, there is a blueprint to follow before getting signed. Below are the steps (simplified).

1. Build an Image: Choose your stage name, music genre, and audience target.
2. Record music: Before a Long Play (LP), an Extended Play (EP) is mandatory. With an EP or mixtape, artists can approach labels and show what they have to offer musically.
3. Get signed: Should the EP be successful, the label signs the artists and gives the green light for the next project.
4. Build a team: An album is a product of collaboration. Make connections, talk to writers and producers, and let them know your vision.
5. Release an Album: The first LP is the introduction to the world and shows what the musicians have to offer.

In fact, that is what Cat did. In 2016, she self-released her first EP titled “Adolescent.” By 2019, she proved determination and released her second EP, “Naive.”

Unfortunately, the Pandemic (2020) put a stop to the world. However, the only thing that grew was the number of people online.

As a result, through social media channels, Cat Burns’ name started growing due to her singing covers of songs. This led her to get signed by the record label “Since 93.” Later on, she embarked on tour as the opening act for major artists such as Ed Sheeran.

Undoubtedly, lockdown, if used to your advantage, was something positive. That was also the case for Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, to name a few, who recorded albums during COVID-19.

Her third EP, “Emotionally Unavailable” (2022), proved the consistency and hunger in her as an artist. Finally, on July 12, 2024, step five was checked. That is, to release the album.

As Cat Burns stated, the album is the output of four years of work. She started working on it at age twenty. Hence, she grew with it and applied all the lessons learned, the good and the bad ones.

Through the 17 “cathartic” songs, as she calls them, the listener overcomes the sadness. Also, the great thing is that they are relatable to teens and adults.

So, what to expect for her sophomore? Will she play it safe or experiment? The sophomore album is a breaking point for many. According to Missy Elliott, it is the best time to experiment!

After all, Cat has surrounded herself with great writers and producers to deliver a high-standard product. Today, Burns has become the voice of all introverts and can only grow from here on.

Secret in Their Eyes is an American crime drama movie released in November 2015. Directed by Billy Ray, the starring actors are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Dean Norris, Michael Kelley, Alfred Molina, and Zoe Graham. Once a colleague’s daughter gets murdered, an investigation team needs to stay strong.

Most people would think that being an investigator is an easy task. In fact, that clues fall right into your lap whilst having coffee and donuts. But that is not how they operate in the district of Los Angeles.

Here, investigators Ray Karsten (Ejiofor), Jessica Cobb (Roberts), and Bumpy Willis (Norris) work in a newly established unit to foresee any terroristic acts after the devastating 9/11 attacks. This, while under the lead of the assistant district attorney, Claire Sloane (Kidman).

One morning, they report to a crime scene. Upon arriving, Ray discovers the victim is Carolyn (Graham), Jess’ daughter. Immediately, he starts digging for evidence to catch the killer.

However, when presenting his results to colleagues Reg (Kelly) and district attorney Mr. Morales (Molina), he finds out that the suspect works for the FBI as an undercover. Therefore, interrogating him would jeopardize ongoing cases. So, with no new leads, the team falls apart.

Thirteen years later, Ray has come up with new findings. He will have one more shot once he convinces the newly promoted Claire to re-open the case. But is it too late?

“Secret in Their Eyes” is based on the book “La Pregunta de sus Ojos (2005),” written by Argentinian author Eduardo Sacheri. In 2009, a film followed, named “El Secreto de sus Ojos,” which won Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars (2010).

Lastly, director Billy Ray has excelled when it comes to suspenseful movies. His previous works as a screenplay writer include “The Hunger Games” (2012) and “Captain Phillips” (2013).

The Spectacular Now is a romantic drama that premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. It stars Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and is directed by James Ponsoldt. As college gets closer, a student must face his past and present to decide his future.

Sutter (played by Teller) seems to have it all. He is popular, the light of the parties, and has a beautiful girlfriend named Cassidy (Larson). However, that changes once she breaks up with him. But worse of all, he must face reality once the parties are over.

At home, he lives with his mother Sara (Leigh) with whom he always has had an arduous relationship. Namely, because she has prohibited him from contacting his estranged father. To numb the pain, he is a heavy drinker.

One day, after passing out in a yard, he meets Aimee (Woodley). Despite not knowing who she is, she does. Hence as they acquaintance each other, they realize they might be a great team. After all, Sutter needs help with his math class whereas Aimee needs that extra push to pursue her dreams.

After much work, Aimee has been accepted to a college in Philadelphia. Therefore, once their relationship becomes more serious, she asks Sutter to come along so they can start a new future together.

Does Sutter accompany Aimee and is he ready to attend college? Nevertheless, before taking that big step, he is willing to get a hold of his father, for better or worse.

Luckily for Shailene and Miles, after going back and forth over the script for three years, they got the part. TSN is their breakthrough role.

Afterward, Shailene Woodley went on to appear in the summer blockbuster “The Fault In Our Stars” (2014) and Miles Teller in the highly acclaimed “Whiplash” (2014). His other features together include the Divergent series.

“The Spectacular Now” won the “Jury Prize Award” at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and is based on the book by Tim Tharp (2008).

A Week in Nashville by Charlotte Cardin is the fourth overall EP and the first of the year. After two solid albums and a possible third one on the horizon, is this the best EP of 2024? In the third edition of Music, Movies, and Me Awards, let’s break it down.

Since a teenager, Charlotte has had an eye for the camera. But what began as modeling transcended to music. Hence, she began attending music contests such as “The Voice.”

As with other musical endeavors, the blueprints have been laid out before. Below are some steps.

1. Record an EP: The EP serves as the resumé to future record labels.
2. Collaborate: Reach out to other artists and stay open for features. Being introduced to other fan bases can generate great results.
3. Consistency: Although commitment is key, release quality over quantity. This is a core element.
4. Release an Album: The first LP is the introduction to the world. Take a leap of faith.

Needless to say, Charlotte debuted her musical journey in 2016 with the EP titled “Big Boy.” Admittedly, she made quite an introduction, and the project received solid reviews.

She also collaborated with Canadian rapper Nate Husser. One year later, in 2017, she kept consistent and released her second EP, “Main Girl.”

Unfortunately, as she began gearing up to mark step number four, that is to release the album, the COVID-19 pandemic (2020) put her musical endeavors on hold.

However, she gave the world a taste of what she was working on and what to expect next. Finally, on April 23, 2021, Charlotte released her major debut LP, “Phoenix.”

The LP was met with positive reviews and debuted at number one on the Canadian Chart. In the music industry, a music product can give the artists a two-year cycle for releasing the album, videos, interviews, touring, etc. Eventually, the process needs to be repeated.

Hence, she headed to the studio, recorded new material, and two years later released her sophomore LP titled “99 Nights” (2023).

Once again, the album struck the right chord among fans and critics. Like its predecessor, it won “Album of the Year” at the Canadian “Juno Awards.” A bold statement for a newcomer.

A Week in Nashville

Nine months afterward, on May 17, 2024, Charlotte presented to fans a taste of her latest studio sessions in the form of an EP, titled “A Week in Nashville.”

During 9:05 minutes of running time and three tracks, the singer showcases her unique sound under great instrumentation. Instead of over-releasing, she marks step three. That is quality over quantity.

Rarely do artists deliver after their sophomore LP. Think about it. You have made an impact on your debut LP and proved consistent on your sophomore, can you find success for a third time, just like Ashe did?

After all, the third one is a hard climb for many. As of now, Charlotte keeps striving! We will keep an eye on what Cardin delivers on her next album.

Haunt is a 2019 horror film directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Behind the production side is Eli Roth. It stars Katie Stevens, Will Brittain, Lauryn McClain, Andrew Caldwell, Shazi Raja, and Schuyler Helford. On October 31st, some teenagers decide to enter a haunted house. Do they make it out alive?

Welcome to the Halloween season movie! The time when most of the population decorate their house and place candy on their porch for small children to collect.

Harper (played by Katie Stevens), Bailey (McClain), Angela (Raja), and Mallory (Helford) are enjoying a ladies’ night out. Later, the girls chat with Nathan (Brittain) and Evan (Caldwell) and befriend each other.

As the night transcends, the group decides to hit the road together. Upon driving, they see a house with a “haunted house” sign around the corner and choose to stop.

At the entry of the house, they are greeted by a person wearing a clown mask. However, there are rules. Before entering the house, they must give up their electronic devices.

Of course, most people would retract from losing their phone privileges. But not these teenagers, who are looking for a spooky Halloween movie adventure.

Once inside, they notice fun games such as “Guess the Body Part.” But as they navigate through the house, they realize it is a maze, they are not alone.

With no phones, will this group of teenagers find their way home, or will it be too late? Sometimes, a spooky adventure can be more than you bargained for.

The Girl On The Train (TGOTT) is a mystery crime drama released in 2016. It is directed by Tate Taylor and stars Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, and Edgar Ramírez. While commuting on the train, a woman begins to envision other people’s lives.

TGOTT: Rachel

Commuting is a part of our daily routine. Whether it is going to meetings or just a regular hangout with friends or relatives. Importantly, it takes us from point A to point B.

In addition, there are different ways of voyaging. For instance, via car, bus, or train, to name a few. For Rachel (played by Blunt), the aforementioned is part of her day-to-day schedule. Every day, she commutes to her workplace via train.

During the ride, there are lots of activities to do. For instance, listening to music, reading the newspapers, or talking to the person sitting next to you.

For her, it is none of the above. She enjoys the scenery and the neighborhood through the glass window. That is how she starts to wonder about other people’s lives.

Megan

Megan (Bennett), a young woman, lives with her husband, Scott (Evans), in a beautiful neighborhood opposite the train tracks. An athletic woman who likes to jog around in the open air and hits the gym for yoga sessions.

Through the years, she has bounced around different jobs. And now she is taking the role of a nanny.

Through the eyes of Rachel, the pitch-perfect lives she desires ever since her divorce from her ex-husband, Tom (Theroux), who has moved on with his life and found himself a new wife.

TGOTT: Anna

Anna is a happily married bride. Particularly, she has everything a woman aspires to be: a mother. Of course, taking care of a baby is a 24/7 job. Thus, the reason why she has hired a nanny.

Just like Megan, Anna lives with her husband, Tom, in the neighborhood opposite the train tracks. A two-floor house and a white picket fence. Undoubtedly, she is living happily ever after.

The truth is, through the lens of the train, the lives of others can be deceiving. Similar to what social media portrays. But once you are not just glancing at the object but getting to know the person, it tells a different outcome. Indeed, a tale of two cities.

So, what do these three females have in common, and how are they bound forever by the story they share?

Lastly, the motion picture is based on the debut novel of the same name, written by Paula Hawkings (2015). Having read the book, I can honestly share that scrolling through each page will have you on the edge of your seat, just like the film.

Julieta is Pedro Almodóvar’s 20th motion picture film. It stars Emma Suárez, Adriana Ugarte, Daniel Grao, Inma Cuesta, Darío Grandinetti, Priscilla Delgado, and Michelle Jenner. Celebrating director Almodóvar’s 75th birthday (also Michelle Husson’s), we present you “Julieta.” When a daughter disappears, how does a mother cope with the pain?

A young Julieta (Ugarte), has found the perfect job as a substitute teacher in Madrid, Spain. One night, on a train, she meets Xoan (Grao), who gains his income as a fisherman.

Before the World Wide Web, communication was done via letters. Upon receiving a handwritten letter from Xoan, they resume their new bond.

Not long after, they become pregnant and welcome their daughter, whom they name Antía (Delgado). As the years pass by, Antía becomes an active teenager who likes sports such as basketball and enjoys the adventure of summer camps.

Unfortunately, relationships can deteriorate. And that is what happens to Julieta and Xoan once he begins an affair with a mutual friend of theirs named Ava (Cuesta).

On one occasion, a brave Julieta confronts him. Angrily, Xoan decides to go boating despite the awful weather. Sadly, that becomes his last fishing trip.

While away at summer camp, Antía befriends Beatriz (Jenner). A girl just like her, and thus they become inseparable. However, at such a young age, Julieta breaks the news of her father’s passing.

On her 18th birthday, Antía leaves for a retreat, leaving no trace behind. But why would she cut ties with her elderly mother (Suárez)? Before the internet, how do you search for your daughter?

That is what both movies, “Julieta” and “Searching,” aim to explore with the key differences in the technological eras.

“Julieta” is based on the book Runaway by writer Alice Munro (2004). Instead of relying on make-up, director Almodóvar cast two actresses to play a young and elderly Julieta, which portrays realness on the screen.

From his 8mm shooting days to founding his own production company called “El Deseo” to releasing twisted films such as “La Piel Que Habito,” Pedro Almodóvar has come a long way to be considered one of the best Spanish film directors.

Willson is the third LP by singer Ashe. It was released on September 6, 2024, and was produced by Collin Pastore and Jake Finch. What happened during these two years, and why was it a good idea to hide from the spotlight? Let’s break it down.

Ashe Rae Willson marked her path as a singer. As previously reported, she worked smart early in her career by collaborating with multiple artists (e.g., musical groups, DJs, and singers).

Thus, this led to her well-executed EPs “Rabbit Hole” (2018), “Moral of The Story: Chapter 1” and “Moral of the Story: Chapter 2” (2019).

So, once she had established her fanbase, on May 7, 2021, she released her debut LP, Ashlyn.” This led to the traditional promo cycle, doing interviews, performing shows, and embarking on a tour. But once the cycle is completed, the singer must head to the studio to record new material.

As reported multiple times, the sophomore album weighs more than the debut. Anyone can make it, the hard part is keeping it, right?

Hence, Ashe worked hard and crafted “Rae.” It was released on October 14, 2022, and the audience could see her growth, confidence post-divorce, and evolution throughout the fourteen tracks.

As the cycle goes on, the tour “Fun While It Lasted” was announced for 2023. However, at the peak of her career and with the momentum going, Ashe Rae Willson canceled it.

During 2023, Rae stepped away from the spotlight. One year later, she explained to her fans why.

1. Music and singing felt hollow and sad.
2. Rehearsing for the tour would set off panic attacks
3. She wanted out of doing music

However, in the midst of her feeling low, she decided to do the following activities:

1. Therapy: A scary word, and not many take the initiative and decide to suffer in silence.
2. Gardened: Outdoor activities can heal the body and mind. Ashe also bought power tools to build things.
3. Family: Spend time with her inner circle. No matter what, family will always be there!

Throughout the process, Ashe fell in love with music again, and this time learned about freedom. On June 27, 2024, Rae announced her third album due out in September, “Willson.” More importantly, her first Independent record.

So, on September 6, 2024, the singer released “Willson.” A twelve-track record where Ashe is enjoying music again.

The truth is the following. We have witnessed this many times. Artists spiraling out of control. The pressure of fame, the album rollouts, the tours. It is exhaustive, and not many deal with it properly. Thus, the reason why the “27 Club” exists.

Many suffer in silence and choose to bottle up those emotions until tragedy strikes. Luckily, that was not the case for Ashe.

The Skin I Live In is a 2011 Spanish film by Pedro Almodóvar. It stars Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Jan Cornet, Marisa Paderes and Roberto Álamo. When a doctor operates on his patient, it may not be voluntary. Celebrating Almódovar’s 75th birthday month and the 13th anniversary of the film, we present “La Piel Que Habito.”

Robert Ledgard (played by Banderas) is an outstanding surgeon. Throughout his career, he has had many accomplishments. His latest burden; rebuilding burn tissue.

The medical branch is precise. Before a newfound prescription or product reaches the market, the protocol requires the following steps:

• Testing: A pharmaceutical lab needs to conduct lots of data. This requires a lot of collections and samples.
• Patients: Tests are not applied directly to humans. That is, animals (i.e. rats) are often used as samples.
• Product: After a positive outcome of testing and sampling, the newfound product reaches the masses.

Luckily for Dr. Ledgard, he has found a human willing to serve as an experimental user, named Vera Cruz (Anaya). She lives in an isolated clinic room named “El Cigarral.” Inside, she has the day-to-day essentials (i.e., bed, TV, exercising equipment).

While in isolation, she has found meditation through yoga. In addition, her servant, Marilia (Paredes), is in charge of serving Vera three meals per day.

On the other hand, Vicente (Cornet) is a teenager living in Toledo, Spain. His mother owns a clothing shop where he lends a helping hand. One evening, he attends a wedding celebration. After too many, he hooks up with a young woman and forces himself onto her.

The Skin I Live In

While the screen time keeps rolling, the viewer learns that Dr. Ledgard is a widow and has lost his beloved daughter. In addition, Vera is not at the clinic by her own will.

So, what is the main reason for her captivity? Most importantly, what do Vera and Vicente have in common?

Not only is “The Skin I Live In” a twisted experiment in the mind of director Pedro Almodóvar. Oddly enough, the testing (the script) and the patients (the actors) mix well for the final product (the film) to be released to the masses (Cannes Film Festival).

Indeed, Pedro Almodóvar’s experiments have generated positive reviews. For instance, his films “Julieta” and “The Skin I Live In” have won the Goya Awards for “Best Actresses” for Emma Suárez and Elena Anaya, respectively.
