<p class="has-drop-cap"><em>Verzuz </em>is a digital streaming online platform for artists to recreate a musical battle experience. The creators are producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. On March 24, 2020, they hopped on Instagram Live for a virtual battle for fans to enjoy. Little did they know that it would become the new normal for some time.</p>

<p class="">To understand the virtual battles, we have to rewind the tape to the early 1970s. When Hip-Hop first burst onto the scene, it gained popularity at house parties. These parties would complement DJs, breakdancing, graffiti, and rapping. Thus, this set the ambiance for one versus one.</p>

<p class="">Hip-hop has always been a competitive sport, and rap battles are proof of that. A rap battle consists of two opponents and a DJ. Once the DJ spins the wheel, the participants take turns to follow the beat and spit their best bars. Lastly, the audience crowns the winner as whoever has the best set.</p>

<p class="">In July 2017, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz called each other out for a virtual beat battle. However, it wasn&#8217;t until the Summer Jam 2018 held in New Jersey that the hit-makers took the stage for a proper face-off. Instead of spitting bars, they came packed with some of their best-produced catalog.</p>

</div></figure>

<p class="">In March 2020, once the COVID-19 pandemic spread, the iconic producers arranged another virtual battle. But this one was different, captivating the attention of millions. As a result, <em>Verzuz </em>music was created.</p>

<p class="">The rules are simple: two opponents (producers or singers) face off in 20 rounds while playing their best catalog. The songs can be:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="">Own solo songs</li>

<li class="">Songs they have written for other artists</li>

<li class="">Songs they have produced</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:10px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="">Instead of packing stadiums or venues, viewers watched the show while joining the Instagram Live session. The first season boasted battles from well-known producers <em>Boi-1da vs. <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/nas-hit-boy-link-again-kings-disease-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Hit-Boy</a></em> to veteran rap artists <em>Nelly vs. Ludacris</em> to singers <em><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/alicia-keys-remains-original-unlocks-full-potential-keys/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Alicia Keys</a> vs. John Legend</em>. The spotlight has always shone on the artists, until now.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-music-movies-and-me wp-block-embed-music-movies-and-me"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="wp-embedded-content" data-secret="jqw09CUC9i"><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/hit-boy-takes-the-spotlight-with-production/" data-wpel-link="internal" rel="noopener noreferrer">Hit Boy takes the spotlight with his music production</a></blockquote><iframe class="wp-embedded-content" sandbox="allow-scripts" security="restricted"  title="&#8220;Hit Boy takes the spotlight with his music production&#8221; &#8212; Music, Movies, and Me" src="https://musicmoviesandme.com/hit-boy-takes-the-spotlight-with-production/embed/#?secret=cTe04mSKka#?secret=jqw09CUC9i" data-secret="jqw09CUC9i" width="600" height="338" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class=""><em>Verzuz </em>has not only brought fans together but has also helped squash long-lasting feuds. Namely, after two decades of not seeing eye to eye, rap artists <em>Jeezy and Gucci Mane</em> put it all behind them by kicking off season 2 in November 2020.</p>

<p class="">Moreover, <em>Verzuz </em>music<em> </em>has also given a platform for producers to display their catalogs. Throughout storytelling, artists and producers share with fans how the song came to be (behind the scenes) and now and then release never-before-heard verses or songs.</p>

<p class="">To fans&#8217; delight, in January 2021, Timbo and Swizz Beatz announced they were in the early stages of implementing holograms into their <em>Verzuz </em>series. In fact, they already have quite the line-up, which could include Hip-Hop&#8217;s <em>Tupac (R.I.P) vs. Biggie (R.I.P) </em>and singers <em>Prince (R.I.P) vs. Michael Jackson (R.I.P). </em></p>

<figure class="wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

<p class="">It is worth mentioning that fans have already experienced holograms before. In 2012, the <a href="https://www.coachella.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">Coachella festival<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a> showcased a posthumous live performance of Tupac Shakur. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how <em>Verzuz</em> applies the technology in the future.</p>

<p class="">Out of a bad situation, <em>Verzuz </em>has been able to bring fans together for a <em>virtual musical battle experience</em>. Despite both producers teaming up for a proper song in 2013 (ironically, called <em>Versus</em>), this collaboration of <em>Verzuz </em>is their best creation yet.</p>

<p class="">Happy birthday, Timbaland! </p>

<p class="has-drop-cap"><em>The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill</em> is the debut vinyl LP of Lauryn Hill. It marked a before and after on her musical journey. On August 25, 2024, for its 26th anniversary, I trace back the beginnings of her life with her then-group, the gift of being at the top as a solo artist, the curse of fame, and her comeback.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:10px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-prelude"><em>Prelude</em></h2>

<p class="">It comes as no surprise that our childhood surroundings shape, alter, or influence our future. That is what happened to Lauryn Noelle Hill, born on May 26, 1975. Being surrounded by instrumentation inspired her to be a performer.</p>

<p class="">At age 16 (1991), she saw the perfect opportunity while still in High School, when a friend by the name of Prakazrel &#8220;Pras&#8221; Michel played down the idea of forming a band alongside his cousin Wyclef Jean. They called themselves &#8220;The Fugees.&#8221;</p>

<p class="">Joining forces sparked their debut album, &#8220;<em>Blunted on Reality</em>&#8221; (1994). A record fused with Hip-Hop, reggae, and rock. Regardless of the lack of positive reviews, the LP introduced its personas to small audiences.</p>

<p class="">But if their debut LP didn&#8217;t catapult them to fame, the second one did. Once &#8220;<em>The Score</em>&#8221; (1996) dropped, it was a game-changer. It hailed them as the most powerful group at that time. Unfortunately, the victory didn&#8217;t last long.</p>

<p class="">The one to blame? The media. As Hip-Hop culture goes, it is mandatory to crown a leader, whether naming the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.) or listing the Top 10 <em>Death or Alive </em>(D.O.A.), friction started to rise amongst the group. &#8220;<em>I don&#8217;t need an entourage. Why do I need a crew for</em>?&#8221;</p>

<p class="">So, who was the leader of the group? Was it Pras, Wyclef (on the production side), or Hill (as the singer)? Indeed, jealousy entered the chart. Just a mere year later, they parted ways. Nonetheless, this motivated her to pursue a solo career.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-the-gift-of-the-miseducation-of-lauryn-hill"><em>The Gift of &#8220;The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill&#8221;</em></h2>

<p class="">Throughout the upcoming year, she locked herself in the studio to record &#8220;<em>The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill</em>.&#8221; Released on August 25, 1998, it hailed her as a triple threat: a singer, a writer, and a producer.</p>

<p class="">Containing the singles such as &#8220;<em>Doo Wop</em>,&#8221; &#8220;<em>Everything is Everything</em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>Ex-Factor</em>&#8220;, the 16-track project catapulted her to new heights of fame. Now, she didn&#8217;t have to share the spotlight with anyone.</p>

<figure class="wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing) (Official HD Video)" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/T6QKqFPRZSA?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="">You know how the saying goes, &#8220;<em>men lie, women lie, numbers don&#8217;t</em>.&#8221; Indeed, she had the numbers to back up the best female rapper slash performer alive title. In just one month, the album reached platinum status.</p>

<p class="">On the record, Hill effortlessly blended the singing and the rapping. It went on to win 5 Grammy Awards (1999). For the next years, she remained at the top. However, the problem with climbing new heights is that once you reach the summit, there is no other place to go but down.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-the-curse-of-ms-hill"><em>The Curse of Ms. Hill</em></h2>

<p class="">At the beginning of the 2000s, Hill went on to seclude herself from the world and became a mother. During that hiatus, she released the live record &#8220;MTV Unplugged No. 2&#8221; (2002) only to be mixed with reviews.</p>

<p class="">A planned reunion album with &#8220;The Fugees&#8221; collapsed due to old friction (2005) with her group, and a solo tour was a disaster (2009). And it only got worse. In 2013, she served a prison sentence for tax evasion. </p>

<p class="">So, as previously mentioned, once at the summit, the view is amazing, but there is no other place but down. And that is the end for many artists. The public never hears from them again, and they become the next candidate for a &#8220;What Happened to X or Y?&#8221; video. However, something strange happened once she got involved in a new soundtrack.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-the-come-back-of-ms-lauryn-hill"><em>The Come-Back of Ms. Lauryn Hill</em></h2>

<p class="">In 2010, Hill performed the &#8220;<em>Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.</em>&#8221; For the first time in years, a successful performance. Now and then, she released singles to positive reviews. However, once she contributed six tracks to the soundtrack of Miss. Simone (2015), a spark was ignited. </p>

<p class="">Upon watching the docu, the viewer can also feel Lauryn&#8217;s pain in a way since her life has an eerie resemblance to Nina Simone (R.I.P.) when it comes to stage performance. Perhaps two misunderstood artists. </p>

<figure class="wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="Nina Simone - What Happened, Miss Simone? - Trailer" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/z7jIOawq8y8?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="">Every artist gets to release their first album. There are two outcomes possible: a classic or a flop. On &#8220;<em>The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill</em>,&#8221; Hill perfectly executes a lyrical motion picture. It sets the bar on how to release concept albums. </p>

<p class="">Despite the downfall she went through, she rose like a phoenix. With only one solo album under her name, Lauryn Hill opened the doors for many female rappers and singers. Her legacy is undeniable, and her blueprint ID can be traced to artists such as Missy Elliot, <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/alicia-keys-remains-original-unlocks-full-potential-keys/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Alicia Keys</a>, <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/444-jay-z/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Jay-Z</a>, <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/kanye-west-wyoming-sessions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Kanye West</a>, and <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/nas-hit-boy-link-again-kings-disease-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Nas</a>, to name a few.</p>

<p class="">As of 2024, the LP has been certified double diamond. Ms. Hill is the only female rapper to have this title.</p>

<p class="">Relisten to the classic &#8220;The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill&#8221; vinyl on its 26th anniversary.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-drop-cap has-text-align-justify"><em>Hip-Hop</em> took its infant steps in the &#8217;70s era. The &#8217;80s era saw its first rap battle before turning deadly by the &#8217;90s. Fortunately, the Golden Era of Hip-Hop set an example. The 2010s era relived the past but entering the 2020s, rap can be found everywhere. On its 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, I trace back how these different hip-hop eras helped and learned from one another to become the most powerful genre.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-1-hip-hop-s-70s-era">1. <em>Hip-Hop&#8217;s &#8217;70s Era</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">On August 11, 1973, the rap era had its big bang when a DJ by the name of Kool Herc threw a party in the Bronx, New York (USA). Soon after, pillars such as <em>Djing</em>, <em>breakdancing</em>, <em>graffiti</em>, and <em>rapping </em>molded the then-new-found genre.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Throughout the &#8217;70s, solo MCs and crews commenced forming, and by the end of the decade, The Sugarhill Gang had its first commercial hit with &#8220;<em>Rapper&#8217;s Delight</em>.&#8221;</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/0tm6gsXe0LSm9zeSspyMQu?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Therefore, the block parties consisted of a Dj scratching the turntables, the dancers synchronizing their bodies to the beat, and the rappers spitting out their rhymes.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">If the &#8217;70s witnessed Hip-Hop emerge, the &#8217;80s expanded rap crews and solo artists across the globe. It wasn&#8217;t always about block parties anymore.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-2-rap-s-80s-era">2. <em>Rap&#8217;s &#8217;80s Era</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Up-and-comers such as Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and Big Pun among others began aiming for rap&#8217;s main title. So, the &#8217;80s birthed the rap battle known as the &#8220;Brige Wars,&#8221; where MC Shan and KRS-One went bar for bar about the true origins of Hip-Hop.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">On one side, MC Shan claimed Hip-Hop was born in the Queensbridge area of New York. That didn&#8217;t sit well with KRS, who counterattacked with the aptly-titled &#8220;<em>South Bronx</em>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">At the end of the day, the beef served as entertainment, and the winners were the fans, who got to spectate, listen to the records, and vote for a winner.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/hip-hop-foundation-sparked-movement/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">How &#8220;Hip-Hop’s foundation&#8221; sparked a movement</a></li>
</ul>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">But what if there weren&#8217;t any rap records to listen to? In 1989, rap group 2 Live Crew&#8217;s song &#8220;<em>As Nasty As They Wanna Be</em>&#8221; sent them to trial for obscenity. Not only that, but N.W.A. couldn&#8217;t even perform at venues without the police showing up. Clearly, Hip-Hop began facing freedom of speech.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Yet, acts such as <em>N.W.A. </em>(e.g., &#8220;<em>Fuck the Police</em>&#8220;), and <em>Ice-T </em>(e.g., &#8220;<em>Cop Killer</em>&#8220;) gave the powerless a voice to stand up against racism, and censorship. Thus, sparking a movement.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-3-the-golden-era">3. <em>The Golden Era</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">The &#8217;90s were all about competition. Dubbed &#8220;<em>The Golden Era of Hip-Hop</em>,&#8221; it birthed other artists such as Jay-Z, Nas, Snoop, Eminem, 2Pac, and The Notorious B.I.G.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Truth is, rap has always been a competitive sport. But what happens when there are more than words being exchanged? In the mid-90s, the culmination of the &#8220;<em>Westside vs. the Eastside</em>&#8221; took the lives of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. With neither of them in the picture, the crown was for the taking.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">By the beginning of the 2000s, Jay-Z vs. Nas entered the ring by releasing &#8220;<em>The Takeove</em>r&#8221; and &#8220;<em>Ether</em>,&#8221; respectively. Luckily, on October 27, 2005, they squashed their rap beef at the Continental Airlines Arena, New Jersey, and set the example in rap.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-4-hip-hop-s-2010s-era">4. <em>Hip-Hop&#8217;s 2010s Era</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">The beginning of hip-hop&#8217;s 2010s era saw a shift in the music industry. Record companies had laid the blueprint on how to sell <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/the-music-industry-evolution-compact-disc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">compact discs</a>. But once consumption morphed into <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/the-music-industry-evolution-online-streaming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">online streaming</a>, this opened the door for a new generation. Most notably, <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/certified-lover-boy-vinyl-drakes-decade-of-hits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Drake</a> ran at an equal pace as streams.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">But what about female Mcs? Well, thanks to Queen Latifah building bridges for females way back in the &#8217;80s with &#8220;<em>Ladies First</em>,&#8221; the &#8217;90s opened the doors for Lil Kim and Foxy Brown followed by Nicki Minaj in the 2010s.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">However, similarly to the past, Hip-Hop&#8217;s 2010s era relived racist acts. Therefore, rap started documenting and penning their emotions down through lyrics. Undoubtedly, it gave hope to the underprivileged to be free.</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/3ZnKEtc2g2JJaeXeRCJhy3?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">If the &#8217;90s experienced the beating of Rodney King, years later, unfortunately, it was clear that the new decade had not escaped racism.<strong> </strong></p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">For example, the deaths of <em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjTfvEvtldg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">Trayvon Martin<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a></em> (2012), <em>Eric Garner </em>(2014), and <em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V94Lphx6z6Y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">Philando Castile<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a> </em>(2016) by police brutality were proof of that. Despite clear video evidence, why wasn&#8217;t it enough for convictions?</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Regardless, Hip-Hop&#8217;s different eras continued to give a voice to the powerless. If the &#8217;80s sparked hope with anthems such as &#8220;<em>Straight Outta Compton</em>,&#8221; Kendrick Lamar&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Alright</em>&#8221; continued carrying the torch.</p>

<figure class="wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="Kendrick Lamar - Alright (Official Music Video)" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Z-48u_uWMHY?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Despite the highs and lows, the genre stuck together and pulled through. Hence, by the end of the decade, in 2017, Hip-hop and R&amp;B became the most consumed genre in the USA surpassing rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll for the first time ever.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-5-hip-hop-s-2020s-era">5. <em>Hip-Hop&#8217;s 2020s Era</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Entering a new rap era, it is clear that Hip-Hop can be found everywhere. That is, in sneakers, sports, movies, and politics. Below is an example of each category.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong><em>Sneakers:</em></strong> In 1986, RUN-D.M.C. teamed up with Adidas (1986) for an endorsement deal. This serves today as a blueprint for artists to venture into partnerships with the footwear industry.</li>

<li class=""><em><strong>Sports:</strong> </em>In 2013, Jay-Z founded Roc Nation Sports. A sports agency that helps athletes with the right brand strategy to have a fruitful career on and off the field.</li>

<li class=""><strong><em>Movies:</em></strong> Movie directors are linking up with rap&#8217;s elite for the movie score. Most recently, in 2023, Dreamville curated the soundtrack for the blockbuster hit Creed 3.</li>

<li class=""><strong><em>Politics:</em> </strong>Witnessing the injustices of probation himself since a teenager, Meek Mill now has a seat at the table and is vouching for fair laws of Probation Reform.</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In summary, the four pillars of rap shaped the genre in the &#8217;70s, and the &#8217;80s witnessed its first battle and censorship. The &#8217;90s suffered its first loss only for the &#8220;<em>golden era</em>&#8221; to redeem the genre and grow from there.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>You never thought that Hip-Hop would take it this far</em>.&#8221;</p>
<cite>-The Notorious B.I.G., <strong><em>Juicy </em></strong>(1994)</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Most importantly, 2 Live Crew&#8217;s crucial victory gives today&#8217;s artists an artistic voice without censorship. In addition, N.W.A.&#8217;s identity can be found in artists such as <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/kendrick-lamar-seeks-therapy-and-breaks-generational-curse-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-vinyl/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Kendrick Lamar</a>. By now it is clear that the past influenced the present and now the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Lastly, it has brought communities and borders together. Today, I can proudly type that because of how the different hip-hop eras (the &#8217;70s, the &#8217;80s, the Golden era of hip-hop, the 2010s, and the 2020s) have learned from one another, rap is the most powerful genre and a global phenomenon.</p>

<p class="">Happy 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop!</p>

<div style="height:10px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">If N.W.A&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyoew4T74_w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right"><em>Straight Outta Compton</em><span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a>&#8221; (2015) taught the audience anything, it was about the daily hurdles the residents went through. Especially during the &#8217;80s, more known as the crack era. Exactly where Kendrick Lamar Duckworth (1987) grew up. &#8220;<em>Pray that we make it to 21.</em>&#8220;</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>On the curb writing raps next to a gunshot. </em><br><em>I&#8217;m trying to duck the influence of my city that&#8217;s brewing</em>.&#8221;</p>
<cite>-K.Dot, <strong>Average Joe </strong>(2010).</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Indeed, the elements that circle a person influence that individual, for better or worse. Admittedly, Kendrick&#8217;s childhood was surrounded by welfare and gang members. &#8220;<em>Everyone I knew was Crip or Piru.</em>&#8220;</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/3r4S1J4YCkx2fuqH2eL9fz?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="152" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" loading="lazy"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Also, another movie that depicts the city of Compton is &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKP_0z52ZAw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right"><em>King Richard</em><span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a>&#8221; (2021). As a teenager, you had to be occupied doing extra activities to keep yourself distracted from the streets, or you could become another casualty at war. &#8220;<em>I&#8217;m more than a statistic.</em>&#8220;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">So, if for Serena and Venus was through tennis for Lamar it was through music. Therefore, during his teens, K. Dot debuted his mixtape (2003) and signed to Terence &#8220;Punch&#8221; Henderson&#8217;s record label, &#8220;Top Dawg Entertainment.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Seven years later, his commercial mixtape &#8220;<em>OD</em>&#8221; (2010) followed. As a result, Kendrick served as an opening act for other well-established rap artists, released his debut album &#8220;<em>Section .80</em>&#8221; (2011), and signed a joint venture with Compton&#8217;s finest, Dr. Dre&#8217;s Aftermath label (2012).</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/0UtnpKaReKUg2GquaSxCyD?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="152" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" loading="lazy"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">By the end of 2012, Kendrick released his sophomore LP titled &#8220;<em>good kid, m.A.A.d city</em>.&#8221; Clearly, it marked a before and after for his career.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>Dreams of living life like rappers do. The only thing we had to free our mind</em>.&#8221;</p>
<cite>-Kendrick Lamar, <strong>Money Trees </strong>(2012)</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Now, Kendrick wasn&#8217;t just dreaming of the life of a rapper, he was living it. And he would go to any lengths to protect his spot. Rap has always been a competitive sport. Ever since Hip-Hop&#8217;s foundation (1973), fans have constructed a pyramid to hail the hottest MC.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In August 2013, K. Dot protected his acclaimed throne by calling out every new rapper and proclaiming himself the king of N.Y. &#8220;<em>I&#8217;m the King of New York, King of the Coast.</em>&#8221; Afterward, he secluded to plot his next material. But how to follow up on such a high-hailed record?</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In fact, there are many ways to find inspiration. For example, one of them can be by incorporating never-used instrumentation or traveling to an unexplored destination like <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/lorde-radiates-summer-vibes-solar-power/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Lorde</a> did for &#8220;<em>Solar Power</em>&#8221; (2021). Hence, this time Kendrick&#8217;s next haven was South Africa.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="450" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-n95-2022-music-video.jpg?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1" alt="&quot;N95&quot; music video of Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers album by Kendrick Lamar ǀ musicmoviesandme" class="wp-image-5463" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-n95-2022-music-video.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-n95-2022-music-video.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-n95-2022-music-video.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-n95-2022-music-video.jpg?resize=1536%2C864&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-n95-2022-music-video.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-n95-2022-music-video.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">© Kendrick Lamar sits in front of a piano with a drink in his hand. <p class="has-text-align-justify">During his visit, he got to explore its tourist attractions, conversate with the locals, and absorb all the beauty. However, not everything was pleasant- survival guilt came into play. &#8220;<em>A friend would never leave Compton for profit.</em>&#8220;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Imagine finally making it as a musician, having the opportunity to go on tour, and stay at 5-star hotels, while on the other side; your relatives, friends, and your city were in shambles.</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/episode/5QX81LIqjZhNXpeYFv8Sct?utm_source=generator&amp;theme=0" width="100%" height="152" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" loading="lazy"></iframe>

<p class="">As painfully stated by Alex Pappademas on &#8220;<em>The Big Hit Show</em>&#8221; (2021); &#8220;<em>Kendrick was touring on a smash hit album, then coming back to Compton to go to funerals.</em>&#8220;</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-medium-font-size"><em>&#8220;<em>Sorry to hear what happened to your homeboy</em></em>. <br><em>When you do make it, give back with your words of encouragement</em>.<br><em>To your City.&#8221;</em></p>
<cite>-Kenny &amp; Paula Duckworth, <strong>Real</strong> (2012).</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Hence, his third album &#8220;<em>To Pimp A Butterfly</em>&#8221; (2015) mirrored the influences he had experienced from South Africa by incorporating musical elements and tackling racial topics. &#8220;<em>I went to Robben&#8217;s Island, that is where Nelson&#8217;s cell is.</em>&#8220;</p>

<figure class="wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="Kendrick Lamar - Alright (Official Music Video)" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Z-48u_uWMHY?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Furthermore, for his next endeavor, &#8220;<em>Damn</em>&#8221; (2017), three years passed. This LP was about penetrating pop culture and reaching a worldwide scale.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">So, how to rank his catalog? In the words of Terence &#8220;Punch&#8221; Henderson, &#8220;&#8216;<em>Good Kid, M.A.A.D City&#8217; was the classic, The &#8216;Damn&#8217; album was a blockbuster, and &#8216;To Pimp A Butterfly&#8217; is the masterpiece</em>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Despite the blockbuster and being the people&#8217;s champion for almost the entire decade, in 2018, Kenny stepped away from the spotlight.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Throughout his career, Mr. Duckworth has been criticized for taking too much time between records as depicted in the table below.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table><tbody><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Album</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Year</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Years Passed</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Days Passed</strong></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Section .80</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2011</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">&#8211;</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">&#8211;</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">good kid, m.A.A.D city</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2012</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">1+ years</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">478 days</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">To Pimp A Butterly</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2015</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">3 years</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">874 days</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Damn</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2017</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2+ years</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">761 days</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">Mr. Morale &amp; The Big Steppers</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2022</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">5+ years</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">1,855 days</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Consequently, 1,855 days had to pass until Kendrick Lamar released his next project, &#8220;<em>Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers</em> Vinyl<em>.</em>&#8221; During this interval, some fans patiently waited while others moved on.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-vinyl">&#8220;<em>Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers</em>&#8221; <em>vinyl</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Undoubtedly, being raised on the streets can affect a person&#8217;s life. Namely, the streets will make you bottle up every emotion before showing it. &#8220;<em>Real men need no therapy.</em>&#8220;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In films, it is common to watch the therapist and the patient on the comfortable couch chatting about issues such as addiction, sexual abuse, depression, daddy issues, etc. &#8220;<em>To my partners that figured it out without a father, I salute you.</em>&#8220;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In reality, the majority can&#8217;t even afford it. Especially those who grow up on welfare. Thus, that same lifestyle and trauma will pass from one generation to another. But is there a way to break this cycle? &#8220;<em>My past won&#8217;t keep me from my best.</em>&#8220;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-2022-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=600%2C600&#038;ssl=1" alt="&quot;Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers&quot; vinyl cover by Kendrick Lamar. ǀ musicmoviesandme" class="wp-image-5461" style="object-fit:cover;width:300px;height:300px" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-2022-studio-album-cover.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-2022-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kendrick-lamar-mr-morale-and-the-big-steppers-2022-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">© &#8220;Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers&#8221; vinyl by Kendrick Lamar. <p class="has-text-align-justify">On &#8220;<em><strong>Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers</strong></em>,&#8221; Kendrick exercises those long-bottled-up emotions through dreamy, and nostalgic yet hard beats. Tracks such as &#8220;<strong><em>Father Time</em></strong>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toBTPGfurLc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right"><strong><em>Rich Spirit</em></strong><span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong><em>Count Me Out</em></strong>&#8221; show the demons he had to fight throughout the process of growing as a man and a father.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>What is fame to me? I shut down too. </em><br><em>Please everybody else but myself. </em><br><em>If I didn&#8217;t learn to love myself, forgive myself&#8230;</em>&#8220;</p>
<cite>-Kendrick Lamar, <strong>Count Me Out</strong> (2022).</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">&#8220;<strong><em>Auntie Diaries</em></strong>&#8221; finds Kendrick reflecting on offensive words learned during elementary school and how to love every person regarding their sex. Now, Lamar is not tap dancing around the conversation anymore.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">It is safe to say that from Kendrick onwards, his family tree will grow up with good morale taught by the parents instead of the streets. &#8220;<em>Congratulations. You broke a generational curse.</em>&#8220;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Regardless, in the era of too much music pollution, Kendrick has not given in. More so, he has taken the time between records to learn, experiment with instruments, meditate, and evolve.</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/5Co3CGD9lBQVNnn7q0px1g?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" loading="lazy"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">So, what to expect in the future? After departing from &#8220;TDE&#8221; (2022), he created his label &#8220;pgLang.&#8221; A platform for him to give back with his words of encouragement. &#8220;<em>Hey man, K. Dot is back in the hood</em>!&#8221;</p>

<p class="">Should every artist follow the laid-out blueprint, -and learn about quality over quantity-, everything will be all right. In conclusion, Kendrick Lamar by far, the illest musician alive.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Happy Birthday, KDOT! Watch &#8220;Count Me Out&#8221; and listen to Kendrick Lamar&#8217;s &#8220;<em><strong>Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers&#8221;</strong></em><strong> </strong>vinyl.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap has-text-align-justify"><em>Hip Hop beef</em> has always been part of the culture. From the &#8220;Bridge Wars&#8221; originating in the &#8217;80s to the &#8220;Eastside vs. Westside&#8221; spiraling out of control in the &#8217;90s. On its 49th anniversary, I re-tell the story of the three lyrical rap battles, their differences, and how the feud between &#8220;JAY-Z vs. Nas&#8221; set an example in rap.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

Squashing the rap beef</a></li></ul></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-1-what-is-beef">1. <em>What is Beef?</em></h2>

<p class="">The Notorious B.I.G. would rhyme it as, &#8220;<em>Beef is when you need two Gats to go to sleep, beef is when you roll no less than 30 deep, beef is when I see you, guaranteed to be in the ICU.</em>&#8220;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Ever since Hip Hop&#8217;s foundation on August 11, 1973, rap has given an outlet for rappers to express either their feelings or document the injustices that are occurring in the community, which as learned before, can spark a movement.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/hip-hop-foundation-sparked-movement/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">How &#8220;Hip-Hop&#8217;s foundation&#8221; sparked a movement</a></li>
</ul>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Moreover, the way artists have dealt with those emotions is by tackling them either as freestyle or as songs. Back in the &#8217;70s, fans would gather to witness two opponents compete in rap battles.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Therefore, the block parties consisted of a Dj scratching the turntables, the dancers breakdancing their bodies to the beat, and the rappers spitting out their rhyming schemes.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Indeed, that was the main goal of Kool Herc&#8217;s first Hip Hop party in the Bronx, New York (USA). An entertaining environment for the fanatics. Like the war up next.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-2-the-bridge-wars">2. <em>The &#8220;Bridge Wars&#8221; </em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">As the &#8217;80s entered the play, the ambient in the scene began shifting. Now, it was about Hip Hop&#8217;s origin. In 1985, rapper <strong>MC Shan</strong> released &#8220;<em>The Bridge</em>,&#8221; where he stated that Hip Hop&#8217;s birthing place was in the Queensbridge side of New York.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">A year later, rapper <strong>KRS-One</strong> fired back with the aptly-titled track &#8220;<em>South Bronx</em>,&#8221; insisting that rap&#8217;s true origins indeed had started in the Bronx.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Since its foundation, rap beef has been like a boxing match. Two competitors sparring each other in 12 rounds with lyrical bars as the crowd spectates.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">After this particular boxing session, the listeners had the two records on repeat and picked their sides as to which rapper had the best punchlines.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">And that is the legacy that the &#8220;Bridge Wars&#8221; left to the stans. A metaphorically, entertainment aspect. But what happens when the ambient becomes hostile?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-3-eastside-vs-westside-beef">3. &#8220;<em>Eastside vs. Westside&#8221; beef</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Entering the &#8217;90s, now the center of the Hip Hop beef wasn&#8217;t the origins but the record labels claiming territory and respect with their artists. Therefore, what followed was a war between the <em>Eastside </em>vs. the <em>Westside</em>.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Firstly, the <strong>Westside </strong>began marking its presence with labels such as &#8220;Death Row,&#8221; (1991) whose most predominant act included <strong>Tupac Shakur</strong>.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">On the other hand, the <strong>Eastside </strong>had its big break when Diddy founded &#8220;Bad Boy Records&#8221; (1993), whose diamond rouge included <strong>The Notorious B.I.G</strong>.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Unlike Shan vs. KRS-One, the eastside vs. westside had more than 12 rounds of sparring sessions. Upon claiming territory as who was the hottest MC, tracks such as &#8220;<em>Hit Them Up</em>&#8221; surfaced.</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/0Z2J91b2iTGLVTZC4fKgxf?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Nonetheless, the rap beef spiraled out of control when it wasn&#8217;t just words being exchanged but it also became physical. As conflicts arose outside of studios and at award shows, the vibe felt dangerous- even for the viewers.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Regardless, the show continued. As fans and the media decyphered the diss tracks and dissected the albums, nobody expected what was going to happen next.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>There used to be a time when you could say a rhyme and wouldn&#8217;t have to worry about one of your people dying.</em>&#8220;</p>
<cite>&#8211; Eminem, <strong>Like Toy Soldiers</strong> (2004)</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Unfortunately, the beef ended with the killings of 2Pac (1996) and Biggie Smalls (1997). Now, the crowd didn&#8217;t have any winner to place the crown to. Yet as devastating as it was, the fans patiently waited for the next feud.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-4-jay-z-vs-nas-hip-hop-beef">4. &#8220;<em>JAY-Z vs. Nas&#8221; Hip Hop beef</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Beginning of the &#8217;00s, two new cats entered the ring. <strong>JAY-Z</strong>, born in N.Y.C., against <strong>Nas</strong>, from Queensbridge. But how did everything start?</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In 2001, as JAY was performing on stage, he premiered the song &#8220;<em>Takeover</em>,&#8221; which let everyone know he wasn&#8217;t a fan of Nas. The track helped create the buzz for his upcoming LP, &#8220;<em>The Blueprint</em>&#8221; (2001). Admittedly for many, he was declared the winner.</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/135lkyQRwFlWfmHjJTxtld?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>Fell from top ten to not mentioned at all. Four albums in ten years? One was nah, the other was Illmatic. That&#8217;s a one hot album every ten year average.</em>&#8220;</p>
<cite>-JAY-Z, <strong>Takeover </strong>(2001)</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">However, Nasty Nas locked himself in the studio to record his response, &#8220;<em>Ether</em>,&#8221; which also helped promote his record &#8220;<em>Stillmatic</em>&#8221; (2001). Once the song hit the streets, the 12-round session was still on.</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/4hLDCpCrPzTZ2BqJJBJXEA?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>How could Nas be garbage? Name a rapper that I haven&#8217;t influenced. KRS already made an album called &#8216;Blueprint.&#8217; I will prove you lost already</em>.&#8221;</p>
<cite>-Nas, <strong>Ether </strong>(2001)</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Undoubtedly, both tracks remain cemented as two of the greatest disses ever recorded. Regardless of how entertaining it was for the viewers, they both knew what they had to do next before it got any further.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-5-squashing-the-rap-beef">5. <em>Squashing the rap beef </em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">After a four-year battle, thankfully, on October 27, 2005, they squashed their Hip Hop beef at the Continental Airlines Arena, New Jersey, and set the example on how to resolve issues without resorting to violence.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">With any competitive sport, there are always going to be two opponents in the ring fighting for the championship. As learned from this post, it can be as entertaining as the &#8220;<em>Bridge Wars</em>,&#8221; or as deadly as the &#8220;<em>Eastside vs. Westside</em>.&#8221;</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/4EywNBsKuCZa0pVBshPfOP?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="152" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" loading="lazy"></iframe>

<p class="">Ever since squashing the rivalry, both continued with their <em>successful </em>careers. JAY-Z&#8217;s 13th studio album, &#8220;<em><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/444-jay-z/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">4:44</a></em>&#8221; (2017) was released to critical acclaim whereas, after thirteen LPs, Nas finally won his first Grammy with the &#8220;<a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/nas-hit-boy-link-again-kings-disease-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal"><em>King&#8217;s Disease</em></a>&#8221; saga (2021).</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Ultimately, <strong>JAY-Z vs. Nas </strong>did what<strong> Tupac and Biggie</strong> never could, which was to meet in a room, talk their differences out, and set an example in rap.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Despite their short careers in the rap genre, Pac and Biggie&#8217;s legacy continues to inspire today&#8217;s generation. Showing that <em>all eyes</em> are still on them and proving that there is <em>life after death. </em></p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Happy 49th anniversary, Hip Hop!</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Re-listen to JAY and Nas&#8217; collaborative track &#8220;<em>Success</em>&#8221; (2007) and watch &#8220;<em>Sorry Not Sorry</em>&#8220;.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color"><em>King&#8217;s Disease 2</em> is the 14th studio album by rapper Nas and his second collaborative project with producer Hit-Boy. On this album, the duo links up for <em>magic</em>. Is &#8220;<em>KD2</em>&#8221; a timeless record?</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Afterward, the buildings divided the races, where on the predominantly black side crime and poverty started to cloud the scene. But along came hope in music form. On <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/hip-hop-foundation-sparked-movement/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">August 11, 1973</a>, Hip-Hop was born in N.Y.C.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"></ul>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Surrounded by this new genre and living in the mecca of Hip-Hop, Nas became inspired and had street dreams. As a teenager, he began writing and spitting in the booth.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In 1994 and 1996, his debut album, &#8220;<em>Illmatic</em>,&#8221; and sophomore, &#8220;<em>It Was Written</em>,&#8221; were released, respectively. Both LPs held him as a top-tier lyricist.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/0QnGI4OgY8ReggLWvEXdgD?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Truth is, you don&#8217;t reach the top without making some enemies. After Tupac and Biggie&#8217;s deaths, the crown was for the taking. So, in the early 2000s, <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/how-jay-z-vs-nas-hip-hop-beef-set-an-example-in-rap/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">JAY-Z and Nas</a> went after it. A four-year beef that ended peacefully in 2005.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Furthermore, in 2006, he declared &#8220;<em>Hip-Hop Is Dead</em>&#8221; by naming his 8th studio of the same name. He felt that the industry was plagued by the use of crunk music.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Entering the new decade, in 2010, rap and reggae intertwined. Namely, Nasir Jones and Damian Marley released &#8220;<em>Distant Relatives</em>.&#8221; Sonically, the outcome was rap, reggae, and African samples.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/4rLsbV5mXnwyn5JWpmHoys?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="">In 2018, Nas joined &#8220;<em><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/kanye-west-wyoming-sessions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">The Wyoming Sessions</a></em>&#8221; alongside Kanye West for his 12th studio album, &#8220;<em>NASIR</em>.&#8221; Unfortunately, the LP performed poorly because of the rushed production.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-king-s-disease-2"><em>King&#8217;s Disease 2</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Therefore, for the new decade, in August 2020, Nas redeemed himself by recruiting <a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/hit-boy-takes-the-spotlight-with-production" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Hit-Boy&#8217;s production</a> on &#8220;<em>King&#8217;s Disease</em>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Unlike his aforementioned project, &#8220;<em>King&#8217;s Disease</em>&#8221; performed great among fans. Not only that, but after 13 albums he finally won &#8220;Best Rap Album&#8221; at the 63rd Grammy Awards (2021).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/nas-kings-disease-2-2021-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=600%2C600&#038;ssl=1" alt="© King's Disease II album cover by Nas ǀ musicmoviesandme" class="wp-image-5411" style="object-fit:cover;width:300px;height:300px" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/nas-kings-disease-2-2021-studio-album-cover.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/nas-kings-disease-2-2021-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/nas-kings-disease-2-2021-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">© &#8220;King&#8217;s Disease II&#8221; album by Nas. <p class="has-text-align-justify">Consequently, aware of their chemistry, the duo linked again for the sequel, &#8220;<em>King&#8217;s Disease 2</em>,&#8221; released on August 6, 2021. Throughout 15 songs, Hit-Boy beats are effortlessly murdered by Nas.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">From addressing a &#8217;90s non-existent beef with Tupac to paying homage to deceased Hip-Hop legends to reuniting with Ms. Lauryn Hill to giving hope to the kids still stuck in the hood. &#8220;<em>KD2</em>&#8221; is a classic.</p>

<blockquote class="is-style-default wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>I sit and talk with the kids, <br>stay down and work on your grades. <br>We all got the access to open doors like we share the same key.</em>&#8220;</p>
<cite>-Nas, <strong>My Bible</strong>/ <strong>40 Side</strong> (2021)</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Undoubtedly, just as Quincy Jones linked up with Michael Jackson for the classic, &#8220;<em>Thriller</em>&#8221; (1982), Nas &amp; Hit-Boy have also created a timeless piece of recording with &#8220;<em>KD2</em>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Indeed, it is safe to say that Nas is in rare form and has found his Quincy in Hit. Someone to push him to the limits to still be <em>Illmatic</em>. At this point, if Nas is 21 years past the &#8217;27 club,&#8217; <em>it was written </em>for him to thrive.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap has-text-align-justify"><em>Call Me If You Get Lost </em>is Tyler, the Creator&#8217;s 6th studio album. Released on June 25, 2021, the LP debuted at #1 on the charts, making it his second time. Now, he recruits the presence of a DJ for a Mixtape Era feel.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="450" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-call-me-if-you-get-lost-brown-sugar-salmon-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1" alt="© &quot;Brown Sugar Salmon&quot; music video of Call Me If You Get Lost album by Tyler, The Creator ǀ musicmoviesandme" class="wp-image-5402" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-call-me-if-you-get-lost-brown-sugar-salmon-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-call-me-if-you-get-lost-brown-sugar-salmon-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-call-me-if-you-get-lost-brown-sugar-salmon-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-call-me-if-you-get-lost-brown-sugar-salmon-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=1536%2C864&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-call-me-if-you-get-lost-brown-sugar-salmon-2021-music-video.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-call-me-if-you-get-lost-brown-sugar-salmon-2021-music-video.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">© Tyler, The Creator sits on a train and looks at the Menu. &#8220;Brown Sugar Salmon&#8221; music video by Tyler, The Creator. <div style="height:10px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Often is the case of individuals pursuing a music career as a collective. We have witnessed this many times. For example, &#8220;<em>The Jackson 5</em>&#8221; in the 1960s and &#8220;<em>Destiny&#8217;s Child</em>&#8221; in the &#8217;90s.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Generally, the advantage of a group is the diverse creativity that each member can bring to the table. Whether it is by singing the chorus, rapping the verses, or producing, the result is a complete song.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">That is how Tyler, the Creator began his career. As a member of the collective &#8220;Odd Future&#8221; (2007). His first self-produced mixtape, &#8220;<em>Bastard</em>,&#8221; and debut album, &#8220;<em>Globin</em>,&#8221; arrived in 2009 and 2011, respectively.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Both projects proved his inventiveness from the get-go. Just hard, raw, and horrorcore bars as shown on the single, &#8220;Yonkers.&#8221; Indeed, once the video dropped, it put him on everyone&#8217;s radar.</p>

<figure class="wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="Tyler The Creator - Yonkers" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XSbZidsgMfw?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Also, follow-ups &#8220;<em>Wolf</em>&#8221; (2013) and &#8220;<em>Cherry Bomb</em>&#8221; (2015) showcased his production abilities. On &#8220;<em>Flower Boy</em>&#8221; (2015), Tyler learned to open up by penning his emotions down.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">All the previous mixtapes and albums began showing fruition, and thus he started climbing the charts but never reaching the top. However, that changed for his next endeavor, called &#8220;<em>Igor</em>&#8221; (2019).</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Debuting at #1, the record won the &#8220;Best Rap Album&#8221; at the 62nd Grammy Awards (2020). Think about it, 13 years after entering the scene as an artist. Solid proof that success doesn&#8217;t happen overnight.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-call-me-if-you-get-lost"><em>Call Me IF You Get Lost</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Afterward, fresh off the win, he began plotting his next move. So, for &#8220;<strong><em>Call Me If You Get Lost</em></strong>&#8221; (2021), he teamed up with producer DJ Drama, best known for his &#8220;<em>Gangsta Grillz</em>&#8221; series.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="450" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-dj-drama-call-me-if-you-get-lost-corso-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1" alt="© &quot;Corso&quot; music video of Call Me If You Get Lost album by Tyler, The Creator ǀ musicmoviesandme" class="wp-image-5403" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-dj-drama-call-me-if-you-get-lost-corso-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-dj-drama-call-me-if-you-get-lost-corso-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-dj-drama-call-me-if-you-get-lost-corso-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-dj-drama-call-me-if-you-get-lost-corso-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=1536%2C864&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-dj-drama-call-me-if-you-get-lost-corso-2021-music-video.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tyler-the-creator-dj-drama-call-me-if-you-get-lost-corso-2021-music-video.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">© Tyler alongside Drama at a birthday party. &#8220;Corso&#8221; music video by Tyler, The Creator featuring DJ Drama. <div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-drop-cap has-text-align-justify">J Cole the Off Season songs<em> i</em>s his sixth studio album. On this record, he emphasizes the importance of training. Dubbed as his most ambitious project, does he reach a new height? On <em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d15cxI5yx5c" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">January 28th<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a></em>, I deep-dive in search of answers to find out what it takes to unlock a new level and also predict the 2022 Grammy winners. Let&#8217;s work.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="450" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/j-cole-the-off-season-amari-2021-music-video.jpg?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1" alt="&quot;Amari&quot; music video of The Off-Season by J. Cole stares at the camera as a flaming basketball hoop lights on fire. &#8220;Amari&#8221; music video by J. Cole. <div style="height:10px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Firstly, let&#8217;s pick up where we left off. It is clear that since his <a href="https://www.discogs.com/es/artist/750828-J-Cole" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">debut LP<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a>, &#8220;<em>Cole World: The Sideline Story</em>&#8221; (2011), Cole was determined to be one of the greatest.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">To do that, he had to leave his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina, with a dollar &amp; a dream. Alike a young Simba, if he was ever going to make it, he had to explore the surroundings.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/0aVfOb4l3toLypWSTukASc?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">However, a career-defining moment came on his third LP, with the release of &#8220;<em><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/j-cole-2014-forest-hills-drive-vinyl-the-blueprint-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">2014 Forest Hills Drive</a></em>.&#8221; Instead of aiming for Hollywood, he detached himself from that superficial dream.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">On his next endeavor, &#8220;<em>4 Your Eyez Only</em>&#8221; (2016), instead of singing from his perspective like on &#8220;2014 <em>Forest Hills Drive</em>&#8220;, he narrated the highs and lows of one of his friends.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Also, on &#8220;<em>KOD</em>&#8221; (2018), he expanded his musical barriers by incorporating trap into his raps. Indeed, all the three aforementioned LPs have one thing in common: they are featureless.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>I don&#8217;t want to look back 20 years from now and be like, <br>&#8216;I never worked with anybody.&#8217; <br>And so I had this idea</em>&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<cite>-J. Cole, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-9mZLh5XU8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">Dreamville Presents: REVENGE<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a> (2019)</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Therefore, atop of 2019, he sent a golden ticket invitation to producers, rappers, and singers to record &#8220;<em>Revenge of the Dreamers III&#8221;</em> in just 10 days.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Consequently, the sessions made him realize the benefits of such a creative process. That is, being surrounded by others can spark productivity.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/36J0iaPDGbYGsHvYpaYs3k?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Ever since its foundation in 1973, Hip-Hop has vouched for equality. For instance, it has given a voice to the powerless to stand up and fight against discrimination, racial injustices, and police brutality.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/hip-hop-foundation-sparked-movement" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">How &#8220;Hip-Hop&#8217;s foundation&#8221; sparked a movement</a></li>
</ul>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">At this point in his career, whenever Cole dropped, his fans were there to support him by buying his music. So, what happens when people need help from a bigger voice?</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">On May 25, 2020, a security guard named George Floyd was killed by police. He died of asphyxiation once the officer kneeled on his neck. &#8220;<em>At times the devil is winning but does that mean God lost?</em>&#8220;</p>

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/0FlfN5cbUUpIHCRH8X1M44?utm_source=generator&#038;theme=0" width="100%" height="152" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" loading="lazy"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">At first, by not being present at the rallies, he felt the wrath of not only his fans but of the public in general. Eventually, he showed up to protest among the civilians and understood their pain.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Afterward, he continued training on the long-awaited album for his fans. Finally, on May 14th, 2021, the record arrived.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-j-cole-the-off-season-songs">J Cole &#8220;<em>The Off Season</em>&#8221; Songs</h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Undoubtedly, the parallels between rap and basketball have always been there. For many stuck in the projects, it is the only way out. You either rap or go to the league.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>When I fell in love with rap, I started realizing the parallel between rapping and basketball</em>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Although Kobe Bryant&#8217;s unreleased album, &#8220;<em>Visions</em>&#8221; (2000), never came to fruition, Damian Lillard&#8217;s &#8220;<em>The Letter O</em>&#8221; did (2016). Before aiming for rap, Cole aspired for the NBA. Clearly, during the off-season, he also trained hard for his hoop dreams.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Hence, just two days after its release date (May 16), he made his professional debut in the Basketball Africa League with the Patriots Basketball Club.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Riddle me this. Whenever you see your favorite team raising the trophy, do you think it is pure luck? Hell no. That moment is the reward of the hard work put in during the off-season.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">But if a rapper/athlete wouldn&#8217;t apply pressure to the craft, the results would match the previous one, thus, comfort becoming the enemy rather than an ally.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">So, what does it take to reach a new height? Namely, by maintaining a schedule and continuous training, writing a verse, doing a drill, making a beat, and sharpening the pen. Only then can the next level be unlocked. Admittedly, it is the blueprint for an everlasting career instead of disposable music.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">To conclude, the songs by J Cole&#8217;s &#8220;<em>The Off Season</em>&#8221; are deserving of 2021&#8217;s &#8220;Best Rap Album&#8221; and future Grammy champion. Last, in my opinion, the rest of the 64th Annual Grammy Awards winners will look as follows:</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap has-text-align-justify"><em>Certified Lover Boy</em> vinyl is Drake&#8217;s 6th studio album, released on September 3, 2021. To understand how he became the best streaming artist of the last decade, we have to trace back to where it all started: <em>Canada</em>.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="450" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2020-trailer-music-video.jpg?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1" alt="&quot;Certified Lover Boy&quot; trailer by Drake ǀ musicmoviesandme" class="wp-image-5390" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2020-trailer-music-video.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2020-trailer-music-video.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2020-trailer-music-video.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2020-trailer-music-video.jpg?resize=1536%2C864&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2020-trailer-music-video.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2020-trailer-music-video.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">© A young Drake looks up in the sky as money falls to the earth. &#8220;Certified Lover Boy&#8221; trailer by Drake (OVO, 2020). <a id="67c19e79-cf09-430c-808c-b46cfc5978c9-link" href="#67c19e79-cf09-430c-808c-b46cfc5978c9">1</a></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:10px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Aubrey Drake Graham, born on October 24, 1986, was born in Ontario, Canada. During his childhood, he flew in and out of his country to the United States to visit his American father.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Ever since a young age, Drake became interested in acting. Half his dreams came to fruition once he got a role on the Canadian TV series &#8220;<em>Degrassi: The Next Generation</em>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">On the other hand, the other half of his aspiration was to become a rapper. Thus, he debuted his CD mixtape &#8220;<em>Room For Improvement</em>&#8221; (2006) followed by &#8220;<em>Comeback Season&#8221;</em> (2007).</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/the-music-industry-evolution-compact-disc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Music and its evolution: Compact Disc (1/2)</a></li>
</ul>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Nevertheless, balancing acting and longing for a music career was arduous to maintain. So, in 2008, he exited the show solely to focus on rap.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Way before hashtags, mixtapes would only reach a limited audience. Firstly, they were challenging to obtain, and secondly, as an artist, the return on investment to get signed was slim.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/3QLjDkgLh9AOEHlhQtDuhs?utm_source=generator&amp;theme=0" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Luckily for Drake, one of its listeners was none other than Lil Wayne. Throughout 2008, they linked to work on his third mixtape, &#8220;<em>So Far Gone</em>.&#8221; Afterward, <em>Nothing Was The Same</em> (get it?).</p>

<blockquote class="is-style-default wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="has-medium-font-size">&#8220;<em>Dropped a mixtape that CD sounded like an album. <br>Who would have thought a wide tour would be the outcome?</em>&#8220;</p>
<cite>-Drake, <strong>Forever</strong> (2009)</cite></blockquote>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Eventually, after the mixtape slash album dropped, Wayne signed him to his label, &#8220;Young Money Entertainment.&#8221; His debut LP, &#8220;<em>Thank Me Later</em>,&#8221; arrived in the summer of 2010 and topped the Billboard charts.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Admittedly, he later confessed that the outcome of his first full-length project was rushed. Therefore, for his sophomore, &#8220;<em>Take Care</em>&#8221; (2011), he invested much-needed time to explore other genres such as R&amp;B.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/4xRxYWgAtL6pzRz94GlZlA?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">By then, Drake had a meticulous album roll-out. However, in 2015, he surprise-released his mixtape &#8220;<em>If You Are Reading This It&#8217;s Too Late</em>&#8221; and collaborated with Future on &#8220;<em>What A Time To Be Alive</em>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Indeed, the mixtapes paved the way for his third endeavor, &#8220;<em>Views</em>&#8220;<em> </em>(2016). Its singles (e.g. &#8220;<em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxpDa-c-4Mc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">Hotline Bling<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a></em>,&#8221; &#8220;<em>One Dance</em>,&#8221; &#8220;<em>Pop Style</em>,&#8221; and &#8220;<em>Controlla</em>&#8220;) catapulted the record atop.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/6n3HGiq4v35D6eFOSwqYuo?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In addition, on his second commercial mixtape slash playlist, &#8220;<em>More Life</em>&#8221; (2017), he expanded his curiosity to delve more into Pop, trap, and again R&amp;B.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Once again, the tapes prepared him for his 5th LP, &#8220;<em>Scorpion&#8221;</em> (2018). It&#8217;s singles (e.g. &#8220;<em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpVfcZ0ZcFM" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">God&#8217;s Plan<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a></em>,&#8221; &#8220;<em>Nice for What</em>,&#8221; &#8220;<em>I&#8217;m Upset</em>,&#8221; etc.) shot the album to the stars.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/3aQem4jVGdhtg116TmJnHz?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Analogous to 2015 and 2017, the mixtape and extended play, &#8220;<em>Dark Lane Demo Tapes</em>&#8221; (2020) and &#8220;<em>Scary Hours 2</em>&#8221; (2021), respectively, served as an appetizer for what was next.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Finally, after a 9-month delay, on September 3, 2021, &#8220;<strong><em>Certified Lover Boy</em>&#8220;</strong> hit online platforms. Similarly, on &#8220;<em>CLB</em>,&#8221; he uses the same formula by incorporating R&amp;B, pop, rap, and trap.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-certified-lover-boy"><em>Certified Lover Boy</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Particularly, in an extended interview with &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmsasEoupO4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">Rap Radar<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a>&#8221; (2019), he explained that he can&#8217;t deliver a full hip-hop-driven project because he has to please all audience&#8217;s tastes.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">More so, if that formula has worked for over a decade, why stop now? For instance, let&#8217;s look at the tables below, which certify his dominance as an artist.</p>

<figure class="is-style-stripes wp-block-table aligncenter"><table><tbody><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Album</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Debut on charts</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>1st Week of Disc sales</strong> <strong>(USA)</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Disc sales (worldwide)</strong></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><em>Thank Me Later (2010)</em></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">#1</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">447,000</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2x platinum</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><em>Take Care (2011)</em></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">#1</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">631,000</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">3x platinum</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><em>Nothing Was The Same (2013)</em></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">#1</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">658,000</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2x platinum</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">It is worth mentioning that before online platforms, only physical compact disc sales were taken into consideration. Hence, this meant that its listeners had to go to the store and buy the music.</p>

<figure class="is-style-stripes wp-block-table aligncenter"><table><tbody><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Album</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Debut on charts</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Album-equivalent unit</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>Streaming</strong> <strong>debut</strong></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong>CDs + Streams (worldwide)</strong></td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><em> Views (2016) </em></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">#1</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">1+ million</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">245 million</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">11x platinum</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><em>Scorpion (2018)</em></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">#1</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">732,000</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">132,45 million</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">9x platinum</td></tr><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><em>Certified Lover Boy (2021)</em></td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">#1</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">613,000</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">743,7 million</td><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center">2x platinum</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In contrast to the table above, the second one includes a column called &#8220;album-equivalent unit,&#8221; which sums the physical CDs plus the online streamings for a total combination.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/the-music-industry-evolution-online-streaming" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">Music and its evolution: Online Streaming (2/2)</a></li>
</ul>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Of course, you don&#8217;t reach the top without making enemies. That is, from beefing with Meek Mill (2015) to feuding with Pusha T (2018) to competing for a release spot against Kanye West&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Donda</em>.&#8221; Regardless, he has prevailed at the top.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2021-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=600%2C600&#038;ssl=1" alt="© &quot;Certified Lover Boy&quot; album cover by Drake ǀ musicmoviesandme" class="wp-image-5389" style="object-fit:cover;width:300px;height:300px" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2021-studio-album-cover.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2021-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/drake-certified-lover-boy-2021-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">© &#8220;Certified Lover Boy&#8221; vinyl by Drake. <p class="has-text-align-justify">Whether singing, rapping, or trapping, Drake has certified a 10+ year run<em> </em>in the game to become the most-streamed artist of the 2010s. Two years into the new decade, can he go back to back?</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">At this point, if you haven&#8217;t been a part of it, at least you got to witness it. <p class="has-drop-cap has-text-align-justify"><em>Man On The Moon 3: The Chosen </em>by Kid Cudi was released on December 11, 2020. The saga is the culmination of 11 years in the making. Throughout the journey, he checks into rehab but is reborn to deliver the final piece of a trilogy.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Scott Mescudi was born on January 30, 1984, in Cleveland, Ohio (USA). At the young age of 11 years old, his father passed away from cancer. This had a major impact on him. However, he had one outlet to cope with the pain: <em>music</em>.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Nevertheless, if rapping was ever going to pan out, he knew he had to ditch the city of Cleveland. Hence, he moved to New York (2004) with a small demo and a pocket full of dreams.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">While in N.Y., he managed to release his first mixtape, &#8220;<em>A Kid Named Cudi</em>&#8221; (2008), which caught the attention of none other than Kanye West. Consequently, Ye signed him to his label, &#8220;G.O.O.D. Music.&#8221;</p>

<figure class="wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">One year later, he kicked off the trilogy with &#8220;<em>Man On The Moon: The End Of Day</em>&#8221; (2009), featuring the buzzing singles &#8220;<em>Day &#8216;N Nite</em>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xzU9Qqdqww" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right"><em>Pursuit of Happiness</em><span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a>.&#8221; In 2010, he kept the momentum and released &#8220;<em>Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager</em>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Not only did the audience learn the introspection of his persona but also of his alter ego, Mr. Rager. In addition, he tackled topics such as addictions and drugs.</p>

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/393MDhe62s8hbH8ETrlxe5?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture"></iframe>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In the years to come, he crafted LPs such as &#8220;<em>Indicud</em>&#8221; (2013), &#8220;<em>Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon</em>&#8221; (2014), &#8220;<em>Speeding Bullet 2 Heaven</em>&#8221; (2015), and &#8220;<em>Passion, Pain &amp; Demon Slaying</em>&#8221; (2016). The aforementioned saw him checking into rehab for suicidal thoughts.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">After therapy, he joined the &#8220;<a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/kanye-west-wyoming-sessions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal"><em>Wyoming Sessions</em></a>&#8221; alongside Kanye, which birthed the record &#8220;<em>Kids See Ghost</em>&#8221; (2018). Indeed, he felt <em>reborn </em>and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojcI5qM1RB0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">unconsciously began working on the final part of the saga<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="h-man-on-the-moon-3-the-chosen"><em>Man On The Moon 3: The Chosen</em></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Firstly, &#8220;<em><strong>Man On The Moon 3: The Chosen</strong></em>&#8221; (2020) kicks off with the perfect &#8220;<strong><em>Tequila Shots</em></strong>,&#8221; where Cudi is pre-celebrating the trilogy. The follow-up track, &#8220;<em><strong>She Knows This</strong></em>,&#8221; carries the beautiful trip with an uplifting beat.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kid-cudi-man-on-the-mon-3-the-chosen-2020-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=600%2C600&#038;ssl=1" alt="© Man On The Moon 3: The Chose by Kid Cudi album cover ǀ musicmoviesandme" class="wp-image-5380" style="object-fit:cover;width:300px;height:300px" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kid-cudi-man-on-the-mon-3-the-chosen-2020-studio-album-cover.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kid-cudi-man-on-the-mon-3-the-chosen-2020-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/musicmoviesandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/kid-cudi-man-on-the-mon-3-the-chosen-2020-studio-album-cover.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">© &#8220;Man On The Moon 3: The Chosen&#8221; album by Kid Cudi. <p class="has-text-align-justify">Furthermore, on &#8220;<em><strong>Show Out</strong></em>,&#8221; he proves he can go bar for bar against artists such as Skepta and the late Pop Smoke (R.I.P.).</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Undoubtedly, being sober is a process that needs dedication. Therefore, on the tracks &#8220;<em><strong>Solo Dolo, Pt. III</strong></em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em><strong>Sad People</strong></em>,&#8221; Cudi asks God for guidance.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Finally, &#8220;<em><strong>The Void</strong></em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em><strong>Lord I Know</strong></em>&#8221; describe temptations, and how he managed to reach the other side. Throughout the cuts, you can hear skits from the movie &#8220;<em><a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/scott_pilgrims_vs_the_world" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">Scott Pilgrim vs. the World<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a></em>.&#8221; Surprisingly, it blends well together.</p>

</div></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Many times we hear of artists tragically passing away. Luckily, he was able to escape the dark cloud to deliver the third act. Unfortunately, something Mac Miller didn&#8217;t get to do on &#8220;<a href="https://musicmoviesandme.com/mac-miller-circles-vinyl-final-goodbye/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal"><em>Swimming </em>in <em>Circles</em></a>.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">To conclude, Kid Cudi&#8217;s record label is called &#8220;Wicked Awesome Records.&#8221; He is currently working on his new album and TV Show called &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C2lyCIusKo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow external" data-wpel-link="external" class="wpel-icon-right">Entergalactic<span class="wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-13"></span></a>&#8221; (2022).</p>
