We all have heard of the famous prison “Alcatraz” (USA). A jail that operated between the years 1934 to 1963. Labeled as America’s strongest prison, it was a place for the most dangerous criminals and clever guards, which had to be alert guarding its three blocks.

Amy Cole (played by Stewart) has joined the confinement called “Guantanamo Bay” (Cuba), which opened in 2002. Just one year after the devastating September 11 attacks. The penal institution houses suspects of Islamic militants. Upon her arrival, she has to obey the following rules:

  1. Do not call them prisoners but detainees.
  2. Do not share personal information.
  3. Avoid bonding with them.

Cole’s duty is simple: watch the detainees on block B, where she meets #471. An inmate jailed for 8 years and counting. Despite clear instructions, she starts breaking the above-mentioned rules. Hence, small talk develops into fluent conversations.

For instance, she learns that he was born in Germany and is a fan of the Harry Potter saga. But most importantly, he is innocent. From there on, she befriends and treats him as Ali Amir (Maadi).

Consequently, Cole raises awareness to her superior, Colonel Drummond (Lynch), on how poorly operations flow at the facility. Thus, one day, Ali can no longer bear the inhumane tortures and holds a blade to his throat.

Although trying to smooth the situation by sharing a personal story, ultimately, she gives him the freedom to choose his faith.

To conclude, the movie “Camp X-Ray” was nominated for the “Humanitas Prize” and is based on a true story. Despite the efforts to close the penitentiary just like Alcatraz, Guantanamo Bay remains active as of this article’s publication time.
