Detroit 2 is the fifth LP by Big Sean, released in the last quarter of 2020, and the sequel to his “Detroit” mixtape (2012). Now he aims to cement himself as one of the greatest. Does he finally seek respect as a lyricist?
Growing up in the “Golden Era of Hip-Hop” can have an impact on your infancy. And that is what happened to Sean Anderson while constantly listening to Em, B.I.G., and Pac. It influenced him to become an MC.
Raised in Detroit, Michigan, he sharpened his pen by writing rhymes and even participated in rap battles. However, getting a record deal can be a hard task.
Before online streams, artists had to knock on companies’ doors with either a mixtape or EP. But for Sean it was different. In 2005, Kanye West happened to be in Detroit conducting a radio interview. Before he knew it, he was freestyling for Ye.

Two years later, he signed to West’s G.O.O.D. Music. Afterward, he began making a name for himself via mixtapes. This paved the way for albums such as “Finally Famous” (2011), “Hall of Fame” (2013), “Dark Sky Paradise” (2015), and “I Decided” (2017). The penultimate one gave him his first #1 debut.
At the top of 2020, he announced his next endeavor titled “Detroit 2.” For this project, he enlisted help from hit-maker Hit-Boy, who executive produced the LP.

Boasting 21 tracks, including personal stories by Dave Chapelle, Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, and features from Post Malone, Ty Dolla Sign, Jhené Aiko, Travis Scott, Royce Da 5’9”, Lil Wayne, and the late Nipsey Hussle, Sean opens like never before.
From confessing a heart disease at age 19, his partner suffering a miscarriage, to contemplating suicide. On “Detroit 2,” you feel as if you are not only knowing his persona but also taking a ride through his beloved hometown.
To conclude, Sean cements himself as one of the greatest and finally seeks respect from his peers. Big time. Thus, in my personal opinion, the best scheme from his catalog. Who would have thought that one freestyle can catapult your career?
Besides being a solo artist, Big Sean teamed up with singer Jhené Aiko to form the duo “Twenty88″ (2016).
