Roma is a drama movie written, produced, and shot by Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón. It premiered at the “Venice International Film Festival” in 2018 and stars Yalitza Aparicio, Nancy García, Marina de Tavira, and Verónica García. The movie narrates the life of a housekeeper and her endeavors.
Firstly, the motion picture begins in the Roma suburb. Housekeepers Cleo (played by Yalitza) and Adela (Nancy) work for an upscale family; Mrs. Sofia (Marina), her husband, their four children, and their grandmother named Teressa (Verónica).
Generally, being a housekeeper means a lot of chores; cooking three meals per day, doing laundry, cleaning the house, and taking care of the children. And Cleo has been doing it for years. One day, the husband leaves for a working trip.
In their free time, both servants like to socialize. Shockingly, Cleo starts a relationship and gets pregnant. She soon comprehends she will be a single parent.
However, she is not alone. Upon telling her boss, she receives a helping hand. Someone willing to drive her to the hospital for regular check-ups. In addition, Mrs. Sofia learns that her husband is not coming back.
One afternoon, Miss Teresa takes Cleo shopping when riots erupt on the street. Suddenly, gunmen burst into the store and shoot. Thus, this leads to Cleo’s water breaking. Consequently, she goes into premature labor.
To take their minds off, Miss Sofia organizes a getaway to the beach. On this trip, she and the children realize that Cleo is more than a housekeeper. She is a family member.
“Roma” not only takes the viewers into the life of Cleo but also of 1970s Mexico and its scarred events such as the “Tlatelolco Massacre.”
Alfonso Cuarón uses a canvas and paints a vivid picture. Hence, the outcome is a pitch-perfect black-and-white semi-autobiography. In “Road to Roma,” the audience discovers why searching for his on-screen childhood nanny (Libo Rodríguez) took up to one year.
Despite having three award-winning movies under his belt ( “Y tú Mamá también“ (2001), “Children of Men” (2006), and “Gravity” (2013)), for Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma” his first feature.
